Looking for a day trip that's equal parts art museum, botanical garden, and giant playground for the imagination? Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ is a 42-acre sculpture park, museum, and arboretum with more than 300 contemporary sculptures scattered across landscaped gardens — and October, with fall foliage setting the grounds ablaze, is one of the best months to visit. It's about 1 hour 40 minutes from Bergen County, making it a perfect fall day trip.

📍 Place

Grounds For Sculpture — 80 Sculptors Way, Hamilton, NJ 08619. Founded in 1992 by artist Seward Johnson on the site of the former New Jersey State Fairgrounds, this is one of the country's premier outdoor art destinations. The collection includes 300+ sculptures — from giant, whimsical figures to abstract works — plus six indoor galleries with rotating exhibitions. Hours in October: 10 AM–5 PM daily (the extended 9 PM evening hours run May–September only). Admission: $25 adults, $18 seniors (65+), $12 students, kids 5 and under free. Timed tickets are required and often sell out on fall weekends — reserve online in advance. On site: Rat's Restaurant (French-country fine dining) and the more casual Van Gogh Café, plus a well-stocked Museum Shop. The grounds are mostly flat with paved paths — stroller-friendly — and wheelchairs/scooters can be rented at the Welcome Center. Keep an eye out for the peacocks that roam the grounds.

🚗 Drive Time

About 1 hour 40 minutes (~90 miles) from Tenafly, Fort Lee, or Palisades Park via the NJ Turnpike (Exit 7A). It's an easy, mostly-highway drive — bring snacks, and plan to arrive at your timed entry slot with a little cushion for parking.

👶 What Kids Can Do

  • Go on a sculpture scavenger hunt — spot the funniest, biggest, and weirdest works
  • Meet the peacocks wandering the grounds
  • Find the ultra-lifelike sculptures and do a double-take
  • Explore the indoor galleries (a good reset when little legs tire)
  • Burn energy on the wide lawns between installations
  • Pick a small souvenir at the Museum Shop

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 What Adults Can Do

  • Lunch at Rat's Restaurant — a destination in itself, with art-filled dining rooms
  • Photograph the sculptures against peak fall foliage
  • Stroll the arboretum grounds — the park is an accredited arboretum
  • Take in the rotating exhibitions in the six indoor galleries
  • Enjoy quieter weekday mornings if you can swing a day off

🍂 Seasonal Highlights

October is arguably the most beautiful month here — maples and oaks across the 42 acres turn gold and crimson, and sculptures framed by fall color make for unforgettable photos. Timed tickets sell out on October weekends, so book early in the week.

🧭 Things to Do Nearby
