DAY TRIP: Tenafly Nature Center — Woodland Trails, Frogs & a Fairy Trail in Bergen County
If you live in Tenafly, Fort Lee, or Palisades Park, you probably drive past a trailhead every week without realizing it. The Tenafly Nature Center sits right on top of the Palisades — nearly 400 acres of forest that feels a world away from the traffic on Route 9W, yet it's practically in our backyard. We've been coming here since our daughter was two, and it's one of those rare outings that works for a wobbly toddler and tired parents at the same time.
📍 Place
Tenafly Nature Center, 313 Hudson Ave, Tenafly, NJ 07670. A nonprofit nature preserve protecting nearly 400 wooded acres, with more than seven miles of marked trails, Pfister's Pond, and a visitor center filled with live animal ambassadors. Non-members pay a small admission ($2 per person or $10 per family) when the visitor center is open (9:30 AM – 4:30 PM daily); the trails themselves are open from an hour after sunrise to an hour before sunset, year-round.
🚗 Drive Time
From Tenafly: about 5–10 minutes (it's right in town). From Fort Lee: about 10–15 minutes. From Palisades Park: about 10–15 minutes. The gravel parking lot is small and fills up fast on pretty weekends, so go early if you can.
👶 What Kids Can Do
• Walk the easy Yellow Trail loop past Pfister's Pond — toddlers love spotting frogs and turtles from the floating dock
• Meet the animal ambassadors at the visitor center, including an owl and a hawk
• Hunt for tiny surprises along the Bellflower Faerie Trail (pure magic for preschoolers)
• Join the Junior Naturalist program for hands-on nature activities
• Explore the Butterfly & Pollinator Garden in summer
• Come back for seasonal programs like maple sugaring in late winter and apple cidering in the fall
👨👩👧👦 What Adults Can Do
• Hike the full trail network — over seven miles ranging from easy loops to more challenging climbs
• Bring binoculars for bird walks along the pond and wetlands
• Photograph fall foliage reflecting in Pfister's Pond
• Join a guided hike or a yoga hike for a slower, social morning outdoors
• Support a local nonprofit — your admission and membership keep 400 acres of forest protected
🧭 Things to Do Nearby
• Grab lunch or coffee on Washington Street in downtown Tenafly, just minutes away
• Head to the Alpine Picnic Area in Palisades Interstate Park for Hudson River views
• Stop by a local bakery for a treat on the drive home — you've earned it after the trails
Parent tip: the trails are easy to moderate, but a carrier beats a stroller on the narrower paths. Bring bug spray in summer and a change of socks — someone always finds the mud.
