DAY TRIP: Storm King Art Center — Giant Sculptures, Rolling Hills & Hudson Views

Imagine an art museum where the ceiling is the sky and the walls are 500 acres of rolling Hudson Valley hills. Storm King Art Center in New Windsor, NY is one of the world's leading outdoor sculpture parks — more than 100 monumental sculptures by renowned artists like Alexander Calder, Maya Lin, and Mark di Suvero, set across meadows and woodlands. And here's the secret: autumn is the best time to visit, when the fall foliage turns the whole place into a living canvas.

📍 Place

Storm King Art Center — 1 Museum Rd, New Windsor, NY 12553
Founded in 1960, Storm King sits on about 500 acres roughly an hour north of Manhattan. Sculptures are woven into the landscape itself — massive steel and stone works that kids can spot on the horizon and walk (or run) right up to. Don't miss Andy Goldsworthy's Storm King Wall, a winding stone wall snaking through the woods. A free wheelchair-accessible tram loops the grounds, and bike rentals are available for covering more ground.

🚗 Drive Time

From Tenafly / Fort Lee / Palisades Park: about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes (via the Palisades Interstate Parkway to Route 6). An easy same-day trip.

👶 What Kids Can Do

  • Spot giant sculptures on the horizon and hike over to them — it feels like a treasure hunt
  • Walk along (and in some cases sit on) the touchable outdoor artworks
  • Ride the free tram loop and listen to the sculpture commentary
  • Picnic on the rolling meadows — visitors are encouraged to bring a blanket lunch
  • Run the hills and meadows between sculptures (plenty of open space to burn energy)
  • Count fall colors — challenge kids to find sculptures framed by red and orange leaves

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 What Adults Can Do

  • Experience works by major 20th-century sculptors in the setting they were designed for
  • Take spectacular photos — monumental steel against autumn foliage is unbeatable
  • Stroll or bike the 500 acres; the café and weekend food trucks cover snacks and light bites
  • Listen to the online audio descriptions — on-site plaques are brief, so the website adds depth
  • Make it a slow, restorative half-day: this is an art walk, not a checklist
  • Visit in October for peak foliage views over the Hudson Highlands

🧭 Things to Do Nearby

  • Cold Spring — a charming Hudson River village about 20 minutes east, with antique shops along Main Street and riverside walks
  • Bear Mountain State Park — pair your art day with a scenic overlook stop on the way home (see our fall foliage drives guide)
  • Know before you go — Storm King is open Wednesday–Monday, 10 AM–6 PM (closed Tuesdays); pre-purchased timed tickets are strongly recommended, and admission runs about $25 per adult
