DAY TRIP: Franklin Mineral Museum — Glowing Rocks, Gem Digging & Family Fun in Franklin, NJ

Some day trips teach kids something without them noticing, because they are too busy digging. The Franklin Mineral Museum in Sussex County is one of those places. Franklin is famous among rock collectors around the world for its fluorescent minerals — ordinary-looking rocks that glow bright green, orange, and red under ultraviolet light. Add a real collecting field where kids can keep what they find, and you have a day trip that feels more like a treasure hunt than a museum visit. Go soon: the museum is open April through November, so early November is a good last-chance window before its winter break. Check the official site before you go, since seasonal hours can change.

📍 Place — Franklin Mineral Museum, 32 Evans Street, Franklin, NJ 07416. The museum sits in the heart of New Jersey's historic Franklin-Ogdensburg mining district, once home to working zinc mines. Inside you will find a large collection of minerals from Franklin and from around the world, plus fossils and Native American stone tools and artifacts. The star of the show is the fluorescent mineral display, where rocks light up in spectacular color under ultraviolet light. There is also a mine replica in the original engine house that once hoisted ore from the Franklin Mine, giving kids a sense of what underground mining felt like.

🚗 Drive Time — About 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes from Tenafly, Fort Lee, and Palisades Park, mostly up Route 17 and Route 23 into Sussex County. It is an easy same-day drive, and the scenery gets noticeably more rural and wooded as you head north.

👶 What Kids Can Do — Watch rocks glow in the fluorescent room; dig for real specimens at the Buckwheat Dump collecting field (each paid admission includes two pounds of rock and a collecting bag); try the Kids Adventure Package for ages 3 to 16 (fossil dig, gem panning, museum admission, plus one fossil to take home); explore the mine replica; check finds under UV light in the shed; browse the museum store for minerals, fossils, UV lamps, and earth science books.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 What Adults Can Do — Learn why Franklin matters: more than 360 minerals have been found in the Franklin-Ogdensburg district, and more than 85 of them fluoresce; enjoy the world collection in Welsh Hall and other galleries; pack a picnic for the two picnic areas on the grounds (there is no food service on site); pair the museum with the nearby Sterling Hill Mining Museum for a full mineral-themed day.

🧭 Things to Do Nearby — Sterling Hill Mining Museum, 30 Plant Street, Ogdensburg, NJ, about 10 minutes away (underground tour, Rainbow Tunnel, Warren Museum of Fluorescence; weekend tours in November and December, check the schedule first); Space Farms Zoo & Museum in Sussex County; High Point State Park for a wide view over three states on a clear day.

Good to know: open Wednesday through Friday 11 AM to 4 PM, Saturday 10 AM to 5 PM, Sunday 11 AM to 5 PM, closed Monday and Tuesday. Outdoor collecting closes one hour before the museum. Combination museum and rock-collecting admission is listed at $25 for adults, $20 for children ages 3 to 16, and $23 for seniors and veterans. Closed-toe shoes are required on the collecting field, children are not permitted to use tools, and children must be accompanied by a paid adult at all times.
