FAMILY TRIP: 3 Days in Lake George, NY — Steamboats, a Historic Fort & Adirondack Lake Fun

Lake George calls itself the Queen of American Lakes, and for a family weekend it earns the title. The village is walkable, the lake is 32 miles of clear Adirondack water, and the mix of a real historic fort, a classic steamboat, mini-golf, and a beach means toddlers and grandparents can all have a good day on the same itinerary. This 3-day plan works best from late spring through early fall, when the steamboats run — many lake attractions operate roughly May through October, so check seasonal hours before booking a fall or winter trip.

Boats on a lake in the Adirondacks

🗺️ Itinerary:

Day 1 — Drive up, settle into Lake George Village, and walk Canada Street. Start with Fort William Henry in the afternoon, then dinner on the village strip.

Day 2 — A morning steamboat cruise, an afternoon at Million Dollar Beach or mini-golf, and an evening stroll along the lakefront.

Day 3 — A slower morning: Prospect Mountain views or the Battlefield Park, one last ice cream stop, then drive home.

📍 Stops:

Fort William Henry Museum, 46 Canada Street, Lake George, NY — a reconstructed 18th-century fort overlooking the lake, with living-history tours, musket and cannon demonstrations, and interactive exhibits about the French and Indian War. Kids love the costumed guides and the booming cannon.

Lake George Steamboat Company, 57 Beach Road, Lake George, NY — home of the Minne-Ha-Ha, one of the last steam paddlewheelers in America, with one-hour cruises that are just the right length for young kids. The Mohican and the Lac du Saint Sacrement run longer sightseeing, lunch, and dinner cruises.

Million Dollar Beach, Beach Road, Lake George — a large public beach on the south end of the lake, an easy walk from the village. Pack towels, sunscreen, and a change of clothes.

Around the World Miniature Golf, 72 Beach Road, Lake George — two 18-hole courses (world landmarks and U.S. icons) plus the Pink Roof ice cream stand, right across from the steamboat pier.

Lake George Battlefield Park, 75 Fort George Road, Lake George — a quieter, stroller-friendly stop with a visitor center and paths where kids can run off energy.

🚗 Drive Times: Bergen County to Lake George Village is about 3.5–4 hours via I-87 North. Break the drive in Albany (about 2.5 hours in) for lunch and a stretch. Once there, everything in the village is walkable; Prospect Mountain is a short drive from the village. This plan uses two nights in Lake George Village itself.

🏨 Where to Stay: Lake George Village has lakefront resorts, motels on Canada Street, and family cabins just outside town. The Fort William Henry Hotel and Conference Center, 48 Canada Street, is one of the few resorts open year-round, with an indoor pool — a good fallback for a rainy day. For summer trips, book early: lakefront rooms fill fast on weekends. No prices are listed here because rates vary widely by season.

👶 Toddler Travel Tips:

Do the one-hour Minne-Ha-Ha cruise, not the long full-lake cruise, with toddlers.

Fort William Henry's cannon demonstrations are loud; bring ear protection for sensitive little ears.

Million Dollar Beach has little shade in places, so bring a pop-up shade tent and plenty of water.

Canada Street is stroller-friendly, but the fort itself has uneven ground — a carrier helps for the smallest kids.

Build in a daily nap or quiet break back at the hotel.

Pack layers even in summer: Adirondack evenings by the lake cool down fast.

💰 Budget Tips:

The beach and Battlefield Park are low-cost anchors; balance them against one paid splurge per day (fort, cruise, or mini-golf).

Many village restaurants are casual and kid-friendly — share appetizers and save the sit-down splurge for one dinner.

Book lodging with a pool or kitchenette if you can; both cut down on paid activities and restaurant meals.

Check seasonal hours before you go: steamboats and some attractions run May through October.
