DAY TRIP: Thomas Edison National Historical Park — Inventions, a Movie Studio & a Peek Inside a Genius's Lab in West Orange, NJ
If your kids have ever asked how a light bulb works, this is the day trip that answers it in the best possible way — inside the actual laboratory where Thomas Edison and his team did the work. Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange preserves Edison's laboratory complex and Glenmont, his family estate, and it is one of the most hands-on history stops in New Jersey for families.
📍 Place: Thomas Edison National Historical Park, 211 Main Street, West Orange, NJ 07052. Start at the Laboratory Complex visitor center, where a short orientation film sets up the story. Then walk through the main laboratory building, the machine shops, the chemistry lab, and a replica of the Black Maria, the world's first purpose-built movie studio. Edison's Glenmont estate is a short drive away, with house tours available by ticket on a limited schedule — check the National Park Service site before you go, because Glenmont hours are more limited than the lab complex.
🚗 Drive Time: About 35–45 minutes from Tenafly / Fort Lee / Palisades Park, depending on traffic, via Route 4 / Route 208 and I-280. Parking is near the Laboratory Complex. The park is open Thursday through Monday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Admission is $15 for visitors 16 and older; kids 15 and under are free, and national park passes are accepted.
👶 What Kids Can Do:
Watch a ranger demonstration — the phonograph demo is a favorite, because kids hear a machine from the 1800s actually play sound.
Pick up the Junior Ranger activity booklet and hunt for Edison's inventions throughout the buildings.
Stand inside the Black Maria replica and learn how early movies were made with sunlight and a rotating roof.
Peek into Edison's famously cluttered office and the library, and count how many different inventions they can spot.
Ask a ranger a question — short talks are posted on a board in the visitor center.
Walk the grounds and imagine what it was like when hundreds of workers filled these buildings with experiments.
👨👩👧👦 What Adults Can Do:
Take in the scale of it: Edison held 1,093 U.S. patents, and more than half of them came out of this West Orange complex.
Enjoy the architecture and the preserved workshops, from the machine shops to the chemistry lab.
Add a Glenmont house tour if tickets are available — the 29-room Queen Anne home shows a very different side of Edison's life.
Pair the visit with lunch in downtown West Orange or nearby Montclair, both a short drive away.
Bring the story home: this is a great stop before a school unit on inventions, electricity, or New Jersey history.
🧭 Things to Do Nearby:
Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange — about 15 minutes away.
South Mountain Reservation in West Orange / Millburn — easy trails and Hemlock Falls.
Montclair Art Museum and downtown Montclair — cafes, bookshops, and a lively main street for dinner.
Branch Brook Park in Newark — especially beautiful in cherry-blossom season.
Tip for parents: plan on 2–3 hours for the laboratory complex, plus extra time if you add Glenmont. Strollers work in much of the lab complex, but some historic buildings have steps, so a carrier can be easier for toddlers. Check hours and Glenmont ticket availability on nps.gov before you leave.
