FAMILY TRIP: 3 Days in Longwood Gardens & the Brandywine Valley — Christmas Lights, Gardens & Family Fun

If there is one Christmas trip that earns its place on every Bergen County family's list, it is Longwood Gardens at Christmas. More than half a million lights, over 100 decorated trees, fountain shows dancing to holiday music, and warm conservatories full of poinsettias — all about two hours from home. Pair it with the Brandywine Valley's museums, and you have a 3-day holiday getaway that feels magical without a single flight. This itinerary is built for families with little kids: short drives between stops, plenty of indoor warm-up time, and lights that are best enjoyed after an early dinner.

🗺️ Itinerary

Day 1 — Drive down & the Brandywine Museum: Leave Bergen County in the morning and arrive in Chadds Ford, PA, by lunchtime. Spend the afternoon at the Brandywine Museum of Art, then settle into your hotel in Kennett Square or Wilmington and enjoy a relaxed dinner.

Day 2 — Longwood Gardens, all day into the evening: This is the big day. Arrive at Longwood in the late morning to explore the conservatories and Children's Garden in daylight, then stay as dusk falls — that is when the outdoor lights come alive. Watch a fountain show, walk the lighted tunnel, and warm up with hot chocolate before heading back.

Day 3 — Yuletide at Winterthur & home: Spend the morning at Winterthur's Yuletide celebration, with its decorated rooms, giant gingerbread house, and dollhouse, then drive home in the early afternoon, arriving back in Bergen County by dinner.

🍂 Seasonal highlight: A Longwood Christmas runs November 20, 2026, through January 10, 2027, and this year's theme is the cosmos — stars, galaxies, moons, and shooting stars woven through the gardens. Book timed tickets as early as you can: popular December evenings sell out well in advance.

📍 Stops

Longwood Gardens, 1001 Longwood Rd, Kennett Square, PA 19348. The heart of the trip. Kids will love the Meadow Tunnel — a 200-foot walkway wrapped in nearly 20,000 lights — the Garden Railway with miniature trains chugging past tiny Longwood landmarks, and the three decorated treehouses, including a two-story Canopy Cathedral Treehouse with views over the lights and the lake. Outside, glowing stars float on the Small Lake, shooting-star decorations line the Meadow Garden path, and the Open Air Theatre puts on fountain shows with 750 water jets dancing to holiday music (weather permitting). Inside the warm conservatories, towering decorated trees, thousands of poinsettias, and a 22-foot rotating fir make the cold disappear. The gardens are open daily 10 AM–11 PM during the Christmas season, and the lights are best after dusk. Timed tickets are required and must be bought in advance: $45–$52 for adults, $25–$32 for youth, and free for children 4 and under. Seasonal treats include hot chocolate and ginger beer made with Longwood-grown ginger, and carolers perform on select evenings.

Brandywine Museum of Art, 1 Hoffmans Mill Rd, Chadds Ford, PA 19317. Set in a restored 19th-century gristmill on the banks of the Brandywine River, this museum is home to three generations of Wyeth family art. Kids will love the holiday model train display and the riverside setting — and the museum is small enough that little legs will not give out. During the holiday season (November 14, 2026–January 10, 2027) it is open daily 9:30 AM–5 PM, closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, with extended evening hours on December weekends. Holiday admission is $25 for adults, $10 for children ages 5–18, and free for children 5 and under.

Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, 5105 Kennett Pike, Winterthur, DE 19735. Yuletide at Winterthur runs November 21, 2026–January 3, 2027, Tuesday–Sunday 10 AM–5 PM, with Holiday Nights on Fridays and Saturdays until 8 PM starting November 27. Kids will love the large-scale gingerbread house, the magical 18-room dollhouse, and more than a dozen beautifully decorated Christmas trees throughout the historic house. The Holiday Market on opening day, November 21, features more than 70 regional artisans. General admission includes the house tour, galleries, gardens, and a garden tram ride, and tickets are good for two consecutive days. Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

🚗 Drive Times

Bergen County to Chadds Ford / Kennett Square is about 2 to 2¼ hours via the New Jersey Turnpike and I-95 — an easy morning drive with one stop. Longwood Gardens to the Brandywine Museum of Art is only about 15 minutes, and the museum to Winterthur is about 20 minutes along scenic Route 52, so once you are in the Brandywine Valley, everything is close together. The drive home from Winterthur to Bergen County is about 2½ hours. For the Day 1 drive, leave by 9 AM to arrive in time for lunch and an unhurried museum afternoon.

🏨 Where to Stay

Base yourself in Kennett Square, PA, or Wilmington, DE, for two nights — both are within 20 minutes of all three stops. Kennett Square is a charming small town with family-friendly hotels, inns, and bed-and-breakfasts, plus walkable restaurants for dinner after a long day at the gardens. Wilmington offers more chain hotels with pools (a lifesaver for burning off toddler energy in the evening) and is a convenient base for the drive home. Book early: hotels near Longwood fill up fast on December weekends. If you are flexible, a Sunday–Tuesday stay is usually quieter and easier to book than a Friday–Sunday weekend.

👶 Toddler Travel Tips

  • Bring the stroller, but plan for the gardens: Longwood's paths are stroller-friendly, but the conservatories and treehouses get crowded at peak times — a carrier is handy for the busiest indoor stretches.
  • Arrive at Longwood before dusk, stay for the lights: little kids do best with a daylight wander, an early dinner, and then the lights as the grand finale — rather than arriving already tired at night.
  • Dress in warm layers: most of the magic is outdoors after dark, so pack hats, gloves, and an extra layer for everyone, plus a blanket for the stroller.
  • Use the warm conservatories as rest stops: when little hands get cold, duck inside for the poinsettias, the Children's Garden, and the Garden Railway — it is the perfect warm-up loop.
  • Keep Day 3 short and sweet: Winterthur's dollhouse and gingerbread house are the toddler highlights, so see those first and skip the long house tour if energy runs low.
  • Pack snacks and a change of clothes: holiday crowds, hot chocolate, and excited toddlers are a combination that rewards being prepared.

💰 Budget Tips

  • Book Longwood timed tickets early: prices vary by date ($45–$52 for adults), and the least expensive evenings are usually weekdays — a Tuesday visit can cost noticeably less than a Saturday.
  • Kids 4 and under are free at Longwood and 5 and under are free at the Brandywine Museum, which keeps the ticket total reasonable for young families.
  • Pack a picnic lunch for Day 1: the Brandywine Valley has lovely spots to eat outdoors, and one packed lunch saves a restaurant bill before the big Longwood day.
  • Stay in Wilmington, Delaware: Delaware has no sales tax, and its hotels are often a better value than the closest options to Longwood — plus you are still only 20 minutes away.
  • Do one big dinner, not three: eat simply on arrival and departure days and save the special meal for the Longwood evening, when everyone is happiest.

The bottom line: Longwood at Christmas is the rare holiday outing that lives up to the hype — and with the Brandywine Museum and Winterthur wrapped around it, three days in the Brandywine Valley is a full, festive, and very doable family trip from Bergen County. Book the Longwood tickets first, then build the rest of the weekend around them.
