Best Tacos in Bergen County — 5 Spots Worth the Drive

Bergen County does not get enough credit for tacos. Between Westwood's cantinas, a Rochelle Park grill with live mariachi, and a Hillsdale deli doing things the old-fashioned way, you can eat your way across the county without ever crossing the Hudson. These are five real, operating spots — from birria with consommé to fish tacos worth the drive — each with something kids will actually eat, too.

Freshly prepared beef tacos with toppings
  1. Pancho's Burritos — 214 Main St, New Milford, NJ. A Bergen County institution since 2004, serving California-style Mexican food in a bright, festive dining room with outdoor seating and live entertainment. The birria tacos and fish tacos are the draws, and the portions are famously generous — the burrito bowls alone have a local fan club. It is loud, lively, and very family-friendly at lunch. Open Sunday–Thursday 11 AM–11 PM, Friday–Saturday until 2 AM. Order the birria tacos, and save room for a margarita (for the adults, obviously).
  2. Lolita's Mexican Cantina — 65 Old Hook Rd, Westwood, NJ. A vibrant, colorful cantina with a happy-hour scene and a menu built for sharing. The al pastor tacos and carne asada tacos get the most love, the birria quesadillas are cheesy and tender, and the fresh guacamole is the table's opening move. Kids do well here — the staff are friendly, the music is upbeat, and there is plenty to look at. Open Sunday 12–9 PM, Monday–Thursday 12–10 PM, Friday 12–11 PM, Saturday 4–11 PM. Order the carne asada tacos and the guacamole.
  3. El Asadero Mexican Grill — 375 W Passaic St, Rochelle Park, NJ. A lively Mexican grill with festive flair, tableside guacamole, and live mariachi on the right night. The birria tacos are the headline, but the menu also runs to molcajete, tomahawk steak, and shrimp tostones for the adults. It is open late — 7 AM to midnight most days, until 1 AM on Fridays and Saturdays — which makes it a good pick for a parents' night out as well as a family dinner. Order the birria tacos with consommé for dipping.
  4. Blue Moon Mexican Cafe — 42 Kinderkamack Rd, Woodcliff Lake, NJ. The Woodcliff Lake location of a beloved Bergen County mini-chain (also in Westwood, Wyckoff, Englewood, and Norwood), known for generously stuffed tacos and a kids' menu that makes family dinner easy. The grilled fish tacos — flaky white fish, crisp slaw, spicy crema — are the signature, and the mini beef and chicken tacos are a smart move for little kids who want to try everything. The Tacos Gauchos and the Tacos Rancheros (three soft corn tortillas with grilled steak, pico de gallo, and lime) are local favorites. Order the grilled fish tacos, and let the kids build their own mini taco plate.
  5. La Morenita Deli and Restaurant — 66 Park Ave, Hillsdale, NJ. The most old-school spot on this list: a Mexican deli and restaurant doing traditional recipes and handmade tortillas, open Monday–Saturday 9 AM–8 PM. The carnitas tacos are the move, and the chilaquiles with eggs and the empanadas are worth ordering for the table. It is small, casual, and unpretentious — the kind of place where the food does all the talking. Order the carnitas tacos and a side of chilaquiles.

Tips for a Bergen County taco crawl: go on a weekday for the shortest waits (Lolita's and El Asadero get busy on Friday and Saturday nights); start with the mini tacos at Blue Moon if your kids are picky — they can sample without committing; and do not skip the consommé when you order birria — dipping is half the experience. Most of these spots do takeout, so a taco night at home is always an option, too.
