DAY TRIP: Morristown National Historical Park — Washington's Headquarters, Jockey Hollow & Peak Fall Color
This week is one of the best weeks of the year to visit Morristown. Northern New Jersey is at or near peak fall color right now, and Morristown National Historical Park pairs that color with real American history your kids can actually walk through. George Washington headquartered here twice during the Revolutionary War, and the park's two main units — Washington's Headquarters in downtown Morristown and the Jockey Hollow encampment a short drive away — make a full, easy day trip from Bergen County.

📍 Place: Washington's Headquarters Museum, 30 Washington Place, Morristown, NJ — the Ford Mansion, where Washington stayed during the winter of 1779-1780, plus museum galleries about the war. Jockey Hollow Visitor Center, Tempe Wick Road, Morristown, NJ — the wooded encampment where the Continental Army spent that famously harsh winter, with a visitor center, the Wick House, and replica soldier huts. Both units are run by the National Park Service — check nps.gov/morr before you go, as days and hours vary by season.
🚗 Drive Time: About 50 minutes from Tenafly, Fort Lee, or Palisades Park, mostly via I-287. The two park units are only about 10-15 minutes apart by car, so visiting both in one day is easy. Arrive in the morning and do Headquarters first, then drive out to Jockey Hollow for an afternoon walk among the fall trees.
👶 What Kids Can Do: Join the Junior Ranger program and earn a badge. Peek inside the replica soldier huts at Jockey Hollow and imagine a winter camp with no central heating. Watch the short park film at the visitor center for the story of the "Hard Winter" in kid-friendly form. Walk the easy stretches around the visitor center and count the colors of the leaves. Stand in the rooms of the Ford Mansion on a guided tour and hear how Washington ran a war from a family home. Bring a simple scavenger hunt: find a red maple, a yellow birch, a stone wall, and a cannon.
👨👩👧👦 What Adults Can Do: Take the Ford Mansion guided tour — the rooms, the furniture, and the stories make the history feel personal. Browse the museum galleries, including rare Revolutionary War artifacts. Drive the Jockey Hollow tour road and stop at the Wick House. Hike one of the park's wooded trails for a quieter, leaf-crunching stretch of the day. End the day with dinner on or near the Morristown Green, the town's lively historic center.
🧭 Things to Do Nearby: Stroll the Morristown Green and the surrounding downtown streets for cafes, bakeries, and shops. The Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is a short drive away and is one of the last places in Morris County to peak each fall. If you still have energy, the Morris Museum in Morristown is a classic rainy-day add-on for families.
🍂 Seasonal highlights: Late October is the sweet spot here: the high ground turned first, and the lower, sheltered spots around Jockey Hollow and the Great Swamp are catching up now. Go this week rather than waiting for Halloween weekend, when much of northern New Jersey will already be past peak. Pack a warm layer, bring cider donuts or pumpkin treats from a local bakery for the car ride, and check the New Jersey Forest Service foliage update before you leave — color can shift fast after a windy night. Practical note: wear comfortable walking shoes, bring water, and confirm the day's tour times on the park website before you go, since some buildings keep seasonal schedules.
