Halloween 2026: Last-Minute Family Halloween — Trunk-or-Treats & Not-Too-Scary Fun, Oct 26–31

Halloween is this Saturday, October 31, 2026 — and if you have not made a plan yet, there is still plenty of family-friendly fun left this week. This is the last-minute guide: North Jersey trunk-or-treats, a not-too-scary town festival, a daytime Wild West Halloween, and the glowing-pumpkin show that runs into November. A note for parents of little ones: the big haunted hayrides and scare farms (Creamy Acres, Schaefer Farms, Field of Terror, Scare Farm) are high-scare, 13-and-up attractions — this guide sticks to the gentle side.

Jack-o'-lanterns on display at night

📍 Place 1: Pumpkin Spice & Everything Fright — Turkey Brook Park event field, Mount Olive, NJ — Friday, October 30, 6–10 PM. Family-friendly fall night of costumes, candy, DJ, vendors for trick-or-treating, costume contest, pet costume spotlight. The 15-minute family-friendly Haunted Hayride is $10 per person.

📍 Place 2: Nutley Trunk-or-Treat — 653 Franklin Avenue, Nutley, NJ — Saturday, October 31, noon–3 PM. Classic trunk-or-treat: decorated car trunks, candy, costumes in a contained setup. Arrive early.

📍 Place 3: Mountain Lakes Halloween Safe Zone — Mountain Lakes, NJ — Saturday, October 31, 4–8 PM. Town-run safe zone for trick-or-treating, a contained, supervised Halloween evening.

📍 Place 4: Spooky Wild West City (daytime) — 50 Lackawanna Drive, Stanhope, NJ. Wild West City runs a haunted evening event (Fridays and Saturdays, October 9–31, 6:30–10 PM, $30 in advance / $35 at the door, PG-13) — but its daytime Spooky Wild West City is the more family-friendly version, with a ghost town to wander, a train ride, a candy shop, and a saloon for treats. Parents should still use discretion for the evening event; the daytime visit is the toddler-safe pick.

📍 Place 5: The Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze — Van Cortlandt Manor, 525 South Riverside Avenue, Croton-on-Hudson, NY — nightly through November 8, 2026. 7,000-plus hand-carved pumpkins, advance timed tickets only. The best backup if October 31 plans fall through, or an encore on November 1–2.

🚗 Drive Time: Mount Olive about 50 minutes west of Tenafly; Nutley about 30 minutes south; Mountain Lakes about 45 minutes west; Stanhope about 1 hour west; Croton-on-Hudson about 50 minutes north. Pick one evening event and one daytime event.

👶 What Kids Can Do: Wear the costume one more time at a trunk-or-treat; ride the family-friendly hayride at Mount Olive and the train at Wild West City; hunt for a favorite carved pumpkin design at the Blaze; enter a costume contest.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 What Adults Can Do: Use the trunk-or-treat as low-stress Halloween; book Blaze tickets in advance — timed entry sells out on peak nights; keep Saturday, October 31 flexible (noon Nutley trunk-or-treat plus evening Mountain Lakes safe zone makes a full Halloween day without a scary house).

🧭 Things to Do Nearby: Chester area farm stores after Mount Olive; Hudson River waterfront in Croton after the Blaze; Lake Hopatcong lakeside lunch after Stanhope.

🍂 Seasonal highlights: This is the final week of Halloween season — Six Flags Great Adventure's Kids Boo Fest also runs its last dates October 31 and November 1. After that the calendar turns to foliage finales and Thanksgiving travel.
