FAMILY TRIP: 3 Days in the Hudson Valley — Sky-High Bridges, Presidential History & an Artist's Castle

The Hudson Valley is Bergen County's easiest multi-day escape: under two hours to a riverside world of a mile-long bridge in the sky, a president's sprawling estate, and a Persian-style castle on a hill. This 3-day, 2-night itinerary keeps drives short, mixes big sights with room for toddlers to roam, and catches the valley's late-October color at its best.

🗺️ Itinerary

Day 1: Drive to Poughkeepsie and walk across the Hudson, 212 feet in the air.
Day 2: Presidential history in Hyde Park — FDR's home, library, and gardens.
Day 3: An artist's hilltop castle at Olana, then a scenic drive home.

📍 Stops

Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park — 61 Parker Ave, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 (Poughkeepsie entrance; the Highland entrance is at 87 Haviland Rd, Highland, NY 12528). The world's longest elevated pedestrian bridge: a 1.28-mile paved walkway across a former railroad bridge, 212 feet above the Hudson. It is stroller-friendly, has an elevator, and is free to enter. Kids love watching trains and boats pass far below, and in late October the foliage on both riverbanks is spectacular.

Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum — 4079 Albany Post Rd, Hyde Park, NY 12538. America's first presidential library, on FDR's family estate. Interactive exhibits and a recreated White House Map Room bring the New Deal and World War II eras to life, and the grounds and gardens are made for a toddler-speed wander. Open 9 AM–6 PM April–October; children 15 and under enter free. Next door, the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt (Springwood) and Eleanor Roosevelt's Val-Kill cottage round out the day.

Olana State Historic Site — 5720 NY-9G, Hudson, NY 12534. Painter Frederic Church's Persian-inspired hilltop house, set in 250 acres of carriage roads, ponds, and Hudson River views he designed himself like a living painting. The grounds are free and open 8 AM to sunset — perfect for a picnic and a stroller walk — while house tours run Tuesday–Sunday and are worth booking ahead.

🚗 Drive Times

Bergen County → Poughkeepsie: about 1 hour 45 minutes. Poughkeepsie → Hyde Park: about 15 minutes. Hyde Park → Hudson (Olana): about 40 minutes. Hudson → Bergen County: about 2 hours. Overnight stops: Night 1 in the Poughkeepsie / Hyde Park area, Night 2 in Rhinebeck or Hudson.

🏨 Where to Stay

Family-friendly hotels cluster around Poughkeepsie and Hyde Park, with cozy inns and bed-and-breakfasts in Rhinebeck and Hudson for a quieter second night. Look for places with free breakfast and a pool if you are traveling with little ones — both make mornings and evenings much easier. Book ahead for fall weekends, when foliage season fills the valley.

👶 Toddler Travel Tips

  • The Walkway is fully paved and flat — bring the stroller, not the carrier, and pack a wind layer: it is breezy 212 feet up.
  • At FDR's estate, let toddlers run the gardens between museum stops; the open grounds are the real toddler highlight.
  • Olana's carriage roads are wide, smooth gravel — ideal for strollers and new walkers.
  • Plan one big sight per day and keep afternoons loose; overtired toddlers and historic-house tours do not mix.
  • Pack snacks and water for every stop — the Walkway has food trucks at each end in season, but do not count on them in late October.
  • Download a few Hudson Valley farm-stand stops for the drive home: cider donuts are the correct souvenir.

💰 Budget Tips

  • The Walkway and Olana's grounds are free — two of the three big sights cost nothing.
  • Kids 15 and under enter the FDR Library free, which keeps the one paid stop affordable.
  • Pack picnic lunches for the Walkway and Olana grounds instead of sit-down restaurants.
  • Travel midweek if you can: valley lodging drops noticeably outside Friday–Sunday foliage weekends.
