FAMILY TRIP: 3 Days in Baltimore, MD — Aquarium Wonders, Inner Harbor & Hands-On Science

Baltimore's Inner Harbor packs a surprising amount of family fun into a very walkable waterfront: a world-class aquarium, a children's museum built for climbing, a hands-on science center, and historic ships — all within a few blocks of each other. It is about three and a half hours from Bergen County, which makes it a perfect long-weekend trip, and almost everything here works in any weather.

Itinerary: Day 1: Drive to Baltimore, spend the afternoon at the National Aquarium, and stroll the Inner Harbor promenade at sunset. Day 2: Port Discovery Children's Museum in the morning, Maryland Science Center in the afternoon. Day 3: A morning at Fort McHenry or a Fells Point stroll, then drive home.

Stops: National Aquarium, 501 East Pratt Street, Baltimore, MD 21202 — one of the nation's top aquariums, right on the Inner Harbor. Kids love the Atlantic Coral Reef, the Upland Tropical Rain Forest, and Shark Alley. Admission is timed, so book ahead; children 4 and under are free. Hours are generally Monday–Thursday 9 a.m.–6 p.m., Friday 9 a.m.–9 p.m., and Saturday–Sunday 9 a.m.–6 p.m. — check aqua.org before you go, as hours can change. Port Discovery Children's Museum, 35 Market Place, Baltimore, MD — three floors of hands-on play for kids from birth to age 10, including a four-story SkyClimber and a life-sized cargo ship kids can captain. Maryland Science Center, 601 Light Street, Baltimore, MD — three floors of interactive exhibits, a dinosaur hall, and a planetarium, right on the harbor. Inner Harbor promenade — free to stroll, with historic ships like the USS Constellation and water-taxi stops. Fort McHenry, 2400 East Fort Avenue, Baltimore, MD — the star-shaped fort that inspired "The Star-Spangled Banner," with wide grounds great for little legs.

Drive Times: Bergen County to Baltimore's Inner Harbor is about 3.5 hours (roughly 200 miles) via I-95 South through the Fort McHenry Tunnel. Once there, the Inner Harbor attractions are walkable — park once and leave the car. Fort McHenry is about a 10-minute drive from the harbor.

Where to Stay: Stay in the Inner Harbor area or nearby Fells Point for the easiest walking access. Harbor-view hotels cost more; hotels a few blocks inland are usually quieter and easier on the budget. Book a room with a mini-fridge if traveling with a toddler.

Toddler Travel Tips: Book the aquarium's first timed entry of the day; bring a stroller for the promenade but plan to park it at Port Discovery; pack snacks and a water bottle; build in a nap window back at the hotel between morning and afternoon stops; the harbor promenade is flat and stroller-friendly; keep a change of clothes in the day bag.

Budget Tips: The promenade itself is free; children 4 and under enter the aquarium free; look for combo tickets if visiting both the aquarium and the science center; eat one meal a day at a casual spot in Fells Point rather than right on the harborfront.
