FAMILY TRIP: 5 Days in Chicago — Dinosaurs, Deep Dish & Lakefront Fun

Chicago is one of the best big-city trips you can take with young kids: the downtown is walkable, the lakefront is gorgeous, the museums are world-class, and one of the city's best zoos is completely free. The catch is the drive — about 12 hours from Bergen County — so this itinerary breaks it up with an overnight stop in Cleveland on the way out, turning the long haul into part of the adventure.

🗺️ Itinerary

Day 1: Bergen County to Cleveland, Ohio (overnight). Day 2: Cleveland to Chicago, afternoon at Navy Pier and Millennium Park. Day 3: Museum Campus — Shedd Aquarium and the Field Museum. Day 4: Lincoln Park Zoo and the lakefront. Day 5: A slow morning in Chicago, then the drive home (or split the return with a second Cleveland-area overnight if your kids are done with car time).

📍 Stops

- Shedd Aquarium — 1200 S DuSable Lake Shore Dr, Chicago, IL. Open daily 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Wednesdays until 10 p.m.). The Abbott Oceanarium's beluga whales, dolphins, and sea otters are the stars, and the Wild Reef's sharks and stingray touch pool keep toddlers mesmerized. Book timed tickets online before you go.

- Field Museum — Museum Campus, on South DuSable Lake Shore Drive, right next to Shedd. SUE the T. rex, the dinosaur halls, and the hands-on Crown Family PlayLab for younger kids make this a full morning on its own.

- Navy Pier — 600 E Grand Ave, Chicago, IL. The 200-foot Centennial Wheel runs year-round in climate-controlled gondolas, and the pier's restaurants and lake views make it an easy first-afternoon stop. Hours are generally 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., later on Fridays and Saturdays.

- Lincoln Park Zoo — Lincoln Park neighborhood, Chicago's North Side. Founded in 1868 and free every day, with the Pepper Family Wildlife Center, the Regenstein Center for African Apes, a carousel, and a Lionel train ride. Hours are generally 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and until 7 p.m. on weekends.

- Millennium Park — downtown Chicago. The Bean (Cloud Gate) is the photo every family takes, and the Crown Fountain's video faces are a hit with kids on warmer days. Free, and right in the middle of everything.

🚗 Drive Times

Bergen County to Cleveland is roughly 7 to 7.5 hours via I-80 West — a long but very doable day with two or three stretch breaks. Cleveland to Chicago is about 5.5 hours along the Lake Erie shore on I-90. The direct Chicago-to-Bergen County return is about 12 hours, so leave early, or split it with an overnight near Cleveland or Toledo. All times are approximate and depend on traffic, especially around Chicago.

🏨 Where to Stay

Stay downtown — the Loop, River North, or the Magnificent Mile — so you can walk to Millennium Park and Navy Pier and take a short ride to the museums and the zoo. For families, look for a suite-style hotel or a vacation rental with a separate sleeping area for kids, a mini-fridge for milk and snacks, and parking included or nearby. In Cleveland on the way out, a highway-side family hotel near downtown or the suburbs keeps night one simple and cheap.

👶 Toddler Travel Tips

- Do Shedd first thing in the morning, when the crowds and the stroller traffic are lightest.

- Lincoln Park Zoo is free, so treat it as a low-pressure half-day — leave when naps demand it, no ticket guilt.

- Pack a lightweight stroller for the lakefront paths, but be ready to fold it for museum elevators and the Navy Pier wheel.

- Bring snacks and water everywhere: Chicago's big attractions are spread out, and a hungry toddler at the Field Museum is nobody's idea of fun.

- Book Shedd and any timed museum tickets online the night before to skip the ticket lines.

- Keep day 5 flexible — if the kids are wiped out, a slow brunch and a late departure beat a forced morning attraction.

💰 Budget Tips

- Lincoln Park Zoo and Millennium Park are free, which offsets the paid museums — plan one free morning and one paid morning each day.

- Deep-dish pizza is the classic Chicago family dinner and feeds a crowd for less than a sit-down restaurant: Lou Malnati's and Giordano's are the two names every local will argue about, and both are kid-friendly.

- Skip downtown parking headaches by staying central and walking or using rideshares for the museum campus.

- Pack a cooler for the driving days — Cleveland and Toledo rest stops add up fast for a family of four.
