DAY TRIP: Paterson Great Falls — New Jersey's Roaring 77-Foot Waterfall in Fall
Just 30 minutes from Bergen County, one of New Jersey's most jaw-dropping natural sights is hiding in the middle of a city. The Great Falls of the Passaic River plunges 77 feet over basalt cliffs in downtown Paterson — and in late October, with fall color on the trees and the river running strong, it is at its most dramatic. Best of all, this national park site is completely free.
📍 Place
Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park — 72 McBride Ave Ext, Paterson, NJ 07501. The falls powered America's first planned industrial city: in the 1790s, Alexander Hamilton championed Paterson as a manufacturing center built around the river's power. Today the park pairs a roaring waterfall with that industrial story — overlooks, a new pedestrian bridge over the gorge (completed in early 2026), ranger-led walking tours, and a Junior Ranger program for kids. The grounds are open sunrise to sunset, and admission is free.
🚗 Drive Time
About 30 minutes from Tenafly / Fort Lee / Palisades Park via Route 4 and I-80. Parking is in a small lot at 72 McBride Ave Ext, so arrive early on fall weekends — the lot fills up, and street parking nearby is the backup plan.
👶 What Kids Can Do
- Watch the falls from the overlooks — on a breezy day you may even catch a rainbow in the mist.
- Join the Junior Ranger program and earn a badge while learning how the river built a city.
- Walk the new pedestrian bridge for a head-on view of the gorge.
- Follow the self-guided Mill Mile route to spot old mill buildings and raceways.
- Count the rainbows, ducks, and herons along the Passaic River.
- Burn off energy on the open lawns near the overlooks (bring a ball — there is room to play).
👨👩👧👦 What Adults Can Do
- Take the free ranger-led walking tour (2 PM Monday–Thursday, 11 AM and 2 PM Friday–Sunday, as staffing permits) for the Hamilton-era industrial story.
- Photograph the falls from multiple overlooks — morning light is kindest, and fall color frames the gorge beautifully.
- Read the interpretive panels on the raceway system that once powered silk mills.
- Pack a picnic: there are picnic tables with a front-row seat to the river.
- Pair the visit with a stroll through Paterson's historic mill district.
🧭 Things to Do Nearby
- Lambert Castle & Garret Mountain Reservation (3 Valley Rd, Paterson) — a storybook castle museum on a hilltop with valley views and easy trails, about 10 minutes from the falls.
- Garret Mountain trails — gentle, toddler-friendly paths and one of the area's best sunset overlooks.
🍂 Seasonal Highlights
Late October is a sweet spot here: the trees around the gorge turn gold and russet, the river is usually running well after autumn rains, and the crowds are far smaller than at New Jersey's better-known fall spots. Bring layers — the gorge is windier than the parking lot — and stop for hot chocolate on the drive home. A free national park, a waterfall, and fall color, all within a half-hour of home: this is the easiest big-payoff day trip in North Jersey.
